Frequently Asked Questions
Do I qualify for a GLP-1 or GIP medication?
GLP-1/GIP medications may be helpful for individuals who:
• Struggle with weight despite healthy efforts
• Have insulin resistance or prediabetes
• Feel constant hunger or strong cravings
• Want medical support alongside lifestyle changes
These medications work best when combined with personalized nutrition, strength training, sleep optimization, and ongoing medical guidance.
For insurance coverage of medication, most people need to have a BMI of 30 or a BMI of 27, plus a weight-related medical condition.
We will help you find lower-cost, quality medication should you not qualify for insurance coverage.
What can I expect from this type of program?
- Most patients experience a 10-20% weight loss over 6-12 months
- Monthly visits with Nurse Practitioner
- Consultation and ongoing guidance with Certified Nutritional Practitioner
- Nutritional, behavioral and motivational coaching
- Medication guidance unlimited regarding side effect management
- Shared decision making regarding initial choice of medication and use of medication during weight loss phase and maintenance phase
What medication are used?
Most commonly we use one of the GLP-1 or GLP-1/GIP injectable medications. These include:
- Semaglutide
- Tirzepatide
These medications offer an average weight loss of 15%. For example, a weight of 200 lbs could expect a 30-lb weight loss.
We may also consider oral medications. These include:
- Metformin - improves insulin sensitivity therefore decreases insulin resistance and benefits metabolism
- Phentermine - stimulant appetite suppressant
- Topiramate - suppresses appetite
- Bupropion -dopamine/norepinephrine action to decrease cravings
- Naltrexone - decreases cravings by agonizing opioid receptors
Typically oral medications offer an average weight loss varies from 5%-10% (ie. weight of 200 lbs could expect a 5-10 pound weight loss)
Medications are never a stand-alone solution. We use them as a tool — alongside comprehensive lab evaluation and individualized care — to help you feel empowered, supported, and in control of your health journey.
You will check in with your provider monthly and also meet regularly with a nutritional practitioner.
What is a GLP-1 receptor agonist?
GLP-1 and GIP are natural hormones your body already makes. They help regulate blood sugar, appetite, metabolism, and how your body stores fat.
These newer medications are designed to gently mimic these hormones — helping your body work the way it was meant to. They support weight loss and metabolic health by:
• Helping you feel full sooner and stay full longer
• Reducing cravings and “food noise”
• Slowing stomach emptying so blood sugar stays stable
• Supporting better insulin function
• Helping your body burn energy more efficiently
The result? Less overeating, improved blood sugar balance, and steady, sustainable weight loss for many patients.
Why does the weight managment program cost more?
In the weight management program you will receive comprehensive primary care services, access to your provider by phone/text and close follow up with a nutritional practitioner. This is very different than other weight loss programs out there. The goal is to support your weight loss while maintaining muscle mass AND addressing underlying metabolic issues so that you can maintain ongoing weight loss. Initially, you'll meet with your provider monthly for about the first 4-6 months. Once you achieved some weight loss and are stabilized on your medication dose, you may drop down to the Premium Plan ($120/mo).
What is the cost of the medication?
We first try to see if you qualify for insurance coverage for injectable medications. Many insurance companies do not offer coverage for this or have very specific guidelines.
If insurance coverage is not available, we will help you find lower-cost medication from a high-quality pharmacy.
Medication costs vary depending on dose and type of medication. Costs range from $150 to $499 per 1-2 months.
